As part of the Teapot Dome Scandal, former Republican Interior Secretary Albert Fall is convicted for accepting a $100,000 bribe in exchange for favorable treatment of oil companies drilling on federal lands. (The more things change...)

Martin Luther King, Jr. jailed in Decatur, Georgia. Held over on old traffic ticket charges, denied bail and sentenced to four months hard labor.

In part to distract attention from the loss of 241 American marines in Lebanon, the Reagan administration orders the invasion of Grenada based on a threat to US medical students at a college in Grenada and an airport being built with Cuban aid to bolster Grenadan tourism. It is later revealed there was no threat to the medical students and the US determines the airport is needed for tourism.

South Africa expels the International Red Cross after it insists on providing aid without regard to race.

A massive manhunt begins for a Black carjacker suspected of killing two White children in South Carolina; numerous Black men are picked up and harassed before the White mother admits she killed the children.
